"By Seas, By Lands"

After Action Report
Battle at Horse Landing outside Palatka, FL.
November 19th - 21st, 2004

Compiled by Cpl. Steven Fowler

Observations:

  • Well based on last year's ribbing of showing up late to colors, even though we were early by our watches, we were early early this time.  By a whole 30 minutes.  Well somebody didn't like it, Major Wells did get a message from the D.O.G.  Oh well, that will teach 'em.

  • Food was great as usual.  No major issues were encountered, except we were almost in the middle of the field, bummer.  No shade of any kind.  Naval unit loved us camping near them.  Chris from the Tampa SCV unit and his wife and kid camped with us.  Russ and his gang did as well.  Funny to see and officer Tent set up without a ridge pole. :O)

  • An overall good event, the battles made the event the best.

Actions:

  • Action Saturday:  The muskets were ready to support the cannons when the order from high command came for our muskets to take the wall on the fort.  Wow what a rush.  We took our positions and got busy. The pyrotechnics were right in front of us and we were all covered in dirt in no time. My neck hasn't been that dirty since I was a kid!! Fantastic!! After a bit, when the Union started there advance to the fort, we were called out to plug a hole in the artillery coverage.  The artillery tried to move up but the advancing Union preventing too much push.  We started retreating an eventually were providing coverage for General Hardee. The battle ended when the Confederate commander surrendered to the Union forces that took the fort.  Not being able to see what happened to the Artillery, they will fill in later.
